By: Mike & Sandra Ray

The finest stars and cars of the Nascar Whelen Southern Modified Tour roared into picturesque
Caraway Speedway for race number one of the 2007 racing season. Burt Myers, Walnut Cove driving
the Dirty South, Allstar Truck and Trailer Repair Chevy broke the old track record with a time of 15.792
to grab the pole at the quick .455 mile speedplant. Twenty six cars started the star studded field with
Cana, Virginia driver, Tim Brown on the outside of row #1. A great battle at the front of the pack found L.W. Miller
in his John Baker Plumbing & Utilities Pontiac leading over Myers and Ted Christopher, Plainville, Conn.
as the race reached lap 100.

Early caution flags kept the field tightly bunched as Lexington driver Brian Loftin in the L&R Transmission
Chevy and Matt Hirschman, Northhampton, Pa. in the Ed Bennett Properties Chevy rounded out the top 5
drivers. A huge crash on lap 121 eliminated Christopher's strong run in the Sherms Towing & Auto Body,
Sunoco Race Fuels, Brady Bunch Dodge and took out great runs from numerous other competitors including
Bobby Hutchens, Lexington, N.C. in the Motorsports Design/ Trim USA Chevy and Earl Baker in the Salem
Plumbing Chevy.

Miller held off a furious charge from Myers over the last 20 laps as his left front tire was going flat. Myers who
restarted in 5th place when the green flag flew on lap 130 charged into second place as the laps wound down.
Southern hard charger Brian Loftin roared under the waving checkered flag for 3rd position with the Northeastern
"Young Gun" Hirschman and Ryan Preece, Kensignton, Conn. in his F.S. Hubeny Mechanical Contractor Chevy
rounding out the top 5 finishers.

the beautiful foothills of Southern Virginia. When the beating and banging had ended Jericho,
New York “Hotshoe” Donny Lia was standing in victory lane kissing the trophy.
Lia started on the pole in his Mystic Missle Dodge after setting quick time of 100.440 mph.
Lia jumped into the lead and held off hard charging Ted Christopher, Plainville, Conn. through
3 cautions and one red flag until lap 119 when Christipher passed for the lead. A great battle
was brewing as numerous cautions kept the field closely bunched together with Christopher
leading the event with Lia in 2nd place, Todd Szegedy in 3rd, Bobby Santos in 4th with Doug
Coby in 5th place as all the cars came into the pits for a mandantory 15 minute break in the
action.
At lap 190 Lia was holding off Christopher with Ronnie Silk, Bobby Grigas and Southern driver
Jay Foley from Stuart, Virginia rounding out the top 5 positions. As the cars started making pit
stops Christopher was charging back through the field and at lap 225 the top 5 driver positions
were held down by Lia, Christopher, James Civali, Tim Brown from Cana, Va. and Foley. The
running order would see a change as former Martinsville winner L.W. Miller charged into the
top five from his 40th starting position.
With the laps winding down everyone was running flat out with Christopher looking for a way
around the leader Lia and L. W. Miller passing both Tim Brown and James Civali to move into
3rd place. When the checkered flag flew Donny Lia had picked up his 6th victory of the 2007
